Dear Dr. Nolland,
I agree! I have a hard time thinking that by "blindness" they meant anything other than what we mean--an inability to see clearly with our eyes. Or that by "leprosy" (tzara't or lepra) they meant something other than a visible skin disease.
Many scholars believe that these terms referred to a range of illnesses, including the skin conditions eczema, leprosy, and psoriasis. These conditions were not uncommon then, and are not uncommon today (except leprosy, which is uncommon in developed countries). Here below are pictures of moderate cases of these three conditions (respectively). So when the NT authors write that Jesus "cleansed"/"cured" (katharizo) them, how can it not have involved some sort of physical, visible effect?

By the way, all of us here in the U.S. are praying for the people of London, and for Britain in general.
